Our aim for this eleventh edition is to return to the past and pay tribute to the Alkestis Theatre, which hosted four editions of the show, from 1996 until 1999. Giorgio Murtas, guitarist and composer from Cagliari, and creator of the show back in 1996, will be the star of the opening concert, on Thursday 8th May. He will perform as a trio together with pianist Andrea Pozza and double bass player Nicola Muresu. The concert, an original production, is entitled “Forma e poesia nel jazz” The Beginning; it is a chronicle of the show from its origins to the present, and will be performed for the first time on this occasion.The second appointment is on Sunday 11th May in the Auditorium of the Cagliari Conservatory with Enrico Pieranunzi, internationally renowned as one of the greatest Italian pianists, who will play in a trio with two milestones of Italian jazz: double bass player Enzo Pietropaoli and drummer Fabrizio Sferra. Their concert, “Space Jazz Trio” reunion, will reunite this legendary Italian trio born in 1984 and which split up in 1992, achieving praiseworthy results. Amongst others, their collaborations with Chet Baker, Lee Konitz and Woody Shaw may be recalled.
“Mare Nostrum” is a new project involving three great musicians: Paolo Fresu, Richard Galliano and Jan Lundgren, to be presented on Tuesday 13th May at the Cagliari Conservatory Auditorium. The three musicians share not only their eclecticism, but also a passion for innovation and research, demonstrated by the fact that they all experience a great variety of musical expressions. Paolo Fresu, of Sardinian origin, is an untameable sound poet; Richard Galliano is the accordion virtuoso par excellence, Piazzolla’s natural heir; pianist Jan Lundgren is one of the excellent innovators of the Scandinavian forerunners.
A different music style is that of Stefano Di Battista, now one of the most sought after jazz saxophonists, who will perform on Friday 16th May, once again in the Auditorium of the Cagliari Conservatory. His unmistakable style and remarkable ability in playing the instrument have led him to travel extensively between Italy and France, ultimately choosing to choose France, Paris to be precise, as his homeland. He has played with the greatest jazz musicians worldwide, including Herbie Hancock and famous artists such as Carlos Santana. He will perform his latest work “Trouble Shooting“, in a trio with Baptiste Trotignon, a Hammond organ virtuoso, and drummer Benjamin Henocq. Thanks to the collaboration with the Alfieri Cafè, on May 11th, 12th and 13th local artists will be given stage space; Forma e poesia nel jazz will act as a showcase for Sardinian jazz and other musicians immediately subsequent to the festival: on May 11th and 13th starting from 11pm and on May 12th starting from 9pm on the stage of the spacious bar in via della Pineta.PROGRAMME
