The Villanova quarter

The Villanova quarter

Villanova
Villanova is the area of Cagliari extending towards the countryside. Indeed, still today you may chance unexpectedly on gardens or vegetable plots adjacent to the traditional one-storey houses. Surrounded by walls, although not a fortress, it was considered an elegant place to walk as well as a residential area for those coming to the town to work as artisan craftsmen or in the adjacent fields. The church of Saint James with its neoclassical facade and internal Gothic details is a masterpiece. To continue with the church of san Domenico, the public gardens and the Municipal Gallery housing the Ingrao collection. The quarter expanded to form the adjacent areas of La Vega, San Benedetto, Sant’Alenixedda, Bonaria, Su Baroni and Monte Upinu.
